Quail hunting is alive and well at Black River Hunting Preserve. Surrounded by beautiful broom straw and the magnificent Cypress swamp of the Low Country, you'll have an experience that lasts a lifetime hunting the exquisite Bobwhite quail — from a Jeep, a Ranger, or on foot, whichever suits your party.

Every hunt is guided. An experienced guide and well-trained pointing dogs work every field with you, and your harvested birds are cleaned and packaged before you head home.

🐦 Add pheasants to any hunt — $25 per bird released

We keep early-release pheasants on the preserve, and because these birds range far, we can also prior-release them ahead of your hunt. Pheasants are charged per bird released, harvested or not — they're a premium bird to raise. Ask for them when you book; they make a spectacular flush.

Lodging Sleeps 6–8, available at an additional charge — stay the night before an early start.
Gun rentals Available upon request if you'd rather travel light.
Bring your own dogs Well-trained, manageable dogs are welcome to hunt in place of ours.
Bigger parties welcome Up to 8 hunters can hunt at the same time — we split into two groups of 4, with 2 shooters at a time during the covey rise.

Good to Know

Before you come

Weather policy: Black River Hunting Preserve may call off a hunt due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. If that happens, your hunt will be rescheduled — never lost.

Hunting license options

Every hunter needs a valid license — and on a licensed preserve like ours there's a cheap option most folks don't know about. Buy any of these from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) before your hunt:

  • Shooting Preserve Permit — $8.50 · available to residents and non-residents; valid only for hunting specified released species on licensed preserves (that's what we do here)
  • Resident Annual Hunting License — $12.00
  • Non-resident options: Annual $125.00 · 10-Day $75.00 · 3-Day $40.00
